Tuesday Teaser (17): Storm Front by Jim Butcher

Today's Tuesday Teaser is another book recommended by a work colleague, and unlike anything I've read before.

Title: Storm Front (The Dresden Files)
Author: Jim Butcher

Have you ever been approached by a grim-looking man, carrying a naked sword with a blade about ten miles long in his hand, in the middle of the night, beneath the stars on the shores of Lake Michigan? If you have, seek professional help.

Storm Front is the first in a series of books featuring Chicago's first and only Wizard P.I. I don't normally read crime novels, but a series of crime novels featuring wizards and magic intrigued me. If I like the first book there are 12 more to follow, and a thirteenth coming later in the year. I'm six chapters in and finding it an enjoyable read. I'm not at the 'wow-what-an-amazing-book' stage yet, though it has made me laugh out loud in a few places. I'll reserve final judgement for when I finish it.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme hosted by MizB of Should be Reading.

Do you have any books you'd like to tease us with?

  1. I read one of the books in this series (can't recall which one) and it was okay but kind of predictable. You sort of get what you expect is how I cam away from it. Be interesting to see how you feel once you've finished.

  3. Sounds fascinating. They always say it's difficult to market a mixed-genre book, but this sounds a great premise to me. I'll be interested to hear what you think when you're finished.

  4. I'd also be interested in what you think when you've finished. I enjoy crime novels and love magic too, but there's something that just doesn't grab me in these.

    Hope you are feeling better.

  6. What is more expansive than "Highly"?
Whatever it is, I more-than-highly recommend this series.
Jim Butcher could write on a used napkin and I'd read it.
His next book in this series, "Ghost Story", comes out july 26th. Cant wait.
His other series, The Furies of Calderon, holds an honored place on my oak bookshelf.

  9. I love this series! I can't wait for and have, in fact, pre-ordered the next Dresden book. My teasers are from Split Second by Catherine Coulter and Spellbound by Cara Lynn Schultz. Happy reading!

  10. I think I'd have given up at the ten-mile-long sword:-) I can suspend disbelief, but there are limits . . .

  11. jabblog, the 10 mile sword is an obvious hyperbole. ;)

I've read Storm Front and a few after it at my husband's recommendation. He's absolutely crazy about those books to the point where he very nearly got depressed when he finished the latest one. Myself, I love Harry. He's one of the best characters I've come across ever. And I love Butcher's worldbuilding, the way he mixes the real world with the magic world and his interpretations of various mythical creatures and such. It's really great. But I couldn't enjoy the break-neck pacing and extremely high levels of tension. I would come away from the books feeling like I'd been spending hours getting beat up. But if you don't mind a higher octane reading experience, they're great.

  25. I've got Storm Front on my Kindle, ready to read after I finish Robert Holdstock's 'Mythago Wood'.

I recently read Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series (starting with 'Furies of Calderon') and absolutely loved it. I think he's on his way to become one of my favourite authors!
