Star Trek As We Know It Blogfest

These are the voyages of the Starship Blogfest, its one-off mission to explore strange character choices, to seek out favourite episodes and incredible films, to boldly go where no blogger has gone before . . . I think.

The adventure begins, my fellow Starfleet Bloggers. Have you reported for duty? Is your keyboard set to stun? Have you dared wear red? Read Science Office Garratt's choices below the linky, and don't forget to report to your fellow officers' duty stations. Engage.

Top Five Characters

1. Tribbles

Come on. You know you want one. Just don't take them near any Klingons.

2. Seven of Nine

In my opinion this character saved Voyager. I just wish I looked that good in a Starfleet uniform.

3. Khan Noonien Singh

A genetically altered superbeing. Evil. Calculating. What's not to like?

4. Spock

Pointy ears. Logic. Dodgy eyebrows. Every Science Officers dream.

5. James Tiberius Kirk

The Captain. Need I say any more? You all know I love William Shatner.

Top Five Episodes

1. The Trouble with Tribbles

I've always loved this episode because it was so ridiculous. You have to laugh once in a while!

2. Year of Hell

In this fourth season episode Voyager spends a year getting beaten to hell by an alien race that possesses the power to change the timeline. As ever, Janeway would not surrender, and took the ship and her crew to near oblivion before beating the aliens.

3. The Best of Both Worlds

For me this was by far the two best episodes to come out of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and set up the back story to the first solo Next Generation Film, First Contact.

4. Amok Time

Spock. Emotions. Nurse Chapel. A fight with Kirk. Just superb.

5. Space Seed

The legendary episode where we first got to meet Khan. I hear rumours that Khan maybe in the next film, and I have a bad feeling that it won't work. Who will they get to play Khan? Ricardo Montalban is Khan. Mr. G suggested Jean Claude Van Damme. I told him to never utter those treacherous words again; after all, revenge is a dish best served cold.

Top Five Films

1. Generations

Kirk: "I take it the odds are against us in a situation this grim."
Picard: "You could say that."
Kirk: "Sounds like fun."

2. The Voyage Home

Kirk: "Everyone remember where we parked."

3. Star Trek (2009)

Scotty: "I like this ship."

4. First Contact

Lily: "Jean Luc. Blow up the damn ship!"
5. The Wrath of Khan

Khan: "He tasks me. He tasks me and I shall have him! I'll chase him 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and 'round Perdition's flames before I give him up!"

So, those were my choices. Do you agree or disagree? Will you be beaming me down to some desolate planet where the odds are grim, and anyone wearing red will die? Or, will you be beaming into the Captain's private quarters?

If you're looking for another blogfest to satisfy your creative urges, the mighty Alex J. Cavanaugh is hosting another of his awesome blogfests. Go on, you know you want to take part.

  1. Oh, this was fun, but I have to add one of my favorite episodes from the original ST. 'A Piece of the Action'.

I loved reading this and going down memory lane.

  2. Fun lists, Ellie. I'd put Voyage Home over Generations, but only by a tinch.

Best original episode: City on the Edge of Forever. How could you not love Harlan Ellison? It did win an Emmy.

My favorite of the series is Generations, followed closely by Deep Space 9. Not a mention in your list for them. Gotta go look up stuff now.

  3. I quite liked the episode of TNG after Picard turned Borg, where he takes time off to visit his brother's vineyard in France. He seems fine until his brother provokes him into losing his temper and then the truth comes out.

Alsp I like that the French speak English with English accents. Ha ha, we won!

  5. No other series has enjoyed such longevity as Star Trek. It remains popular after forty years. Fascinating.

Love your choices. In this, you can do no wrong.

  6. A fantastic list, Ellie! I always loved 7 of 9. She kept me watching that series till the end. Between Spock and Kirk, I don't know who I would...They are so different, yet so sexy.
The Borg shows were fascinating and scary. I actually cried when they decimated the fleet.
I forgot to pick five movies, I think Wrath of Khan would be #1. Thanks for the blogfest. Live long and prosper.

  7. i agree with one character: spock

the tribbles were worth a mention, but a FAVE? nyet!

it's only 10:45 pm here, so i can't post my stuff for a while yet... if i fall asleep, it'll have to be when it's later in the morning for me... like after i take my dog out for his walk, and my coffee brews! ;)

  10. Ellie, I love all your choices! I so loved all the quirky fun~ I am thinking about Khan...I wonder we need him to be Latin. Maybe Antonio Banderas could do it; it will be awful hard to fill Khan's boots. I know everyone is thinking "Puss in Boots", lol

I am going to go on a STAR TREK binge! Thanks for the fun time warp~:D

  11. I think the Star Trek thing will outlive Star Wars and go on for generations, recreating itself with new generations of starship crew members and new galactic challenges.

Thanks for the Blogfest. A five star funfest for sure!

  12. Great list, Ellie! As for a new Khan, how Naveen Andrews, best known for playing Sayid on "Lost". He can be both charming and ferocious, often at the same time, traits that define Khan. Plus he has the added advantage of actually being Indian.

  14. Yay!!! Yay for Tribbles!! We love tribbles! And KHAAAAAAN!!! AWwwwwwww! Lovely lovely lovely selection!! Khan in the new film?!?! Antonio Banderas without a t-shirt! Yum. He can scream out Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!

It's weird cos I thought the whole borg thing saved voyager but then got too distracted with Seven of Nine. The rest of the cast just sort of worked around her. Oh I'm a DS9-er to be honest. I loved the overall story arc.

Next Generation was pants the moment they killed the lovely Tasha Yar! Ahem. Off I go to find my pass to the captain's private quarters.

    Take care

  15. Loved your choices, the Tribbles made me giggle. I remember the follow up episode with the mortified Worf.

You are a real salwart as most of your choices are from classic episodes. :O)

    Coolness.
And you know I love the tribbles. Classic for sure. This was so fun! Thanks for the great idea, Ellie!

  20. Great list Ellie, loved the quotes. Thanks for doing this Blogfest, now I'm watching them all over again

  21. A fine selection, and an interesting way to stretch the definition of character with the tribbles.

Drat, I forgot to list my 5 movies. Well, too late now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wonderful! There is nothing like a Tribble. That was my first pic also. I got to hold one at a Star Trek convention. And Ricardo Montaloban as Khan...totally hot. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. yay star trek!!
    awesomtasticful choices!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Excellent choices, Ellie! Who doesn't love Seven of Nine? She was hot! I didn't pick movies, but it would be a toss up between First Contact and The Wrath of Khan.

  25. Thanks so much for the great blogfest. Kirk is awesome! Great picture.

  26. Fabulous choices! I definitely want a Tribble! And I love the quotes - great :)

  27. Thanks for the fun blogfest. I loved Seven of Nine! My list wasn't as extensive, but you covered so much.

  28. 7of9...Yep. Pretty much the only reason I tuned in to Voyager! Thanks for putting this Blogfest together, Ellie.

  29. great choices on all of it. wish i'd had time to participate. we love Star Trek here, but i have limited time to blog right now.

  30. Such a great blogfest! I am re-discovering episodes that I want to watch again, and discovering new ones! - I've never seen Space Seed!!! I didn't know Khan showed up in an episode, I just knew him from the Star Trek II movie.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wonderful! I love Nine as well. I hope you have a fantastic Monday!

  32. I must like Star Trek more than I thought, as I got about 75% of that. Amazing.

    Best line ever:

    "KAAAAAAHN!!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  33. Great list. Tribbles= awesome (well... until they start crowding the ship).
Thanks for hosting this blogfest: it was a great idea :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. All great choices, Ellii. Khan is also one of my favorites. I don't know, I think Jean Claude could do it - except he's a lot older than the new crew.

While 7 of 9 was a great character, I have to say that I was always distracted by her titanium padded boobs - and I like guys, by the way - but I couldn't help it. It was all just so... unnatural. Everytime she was on the screen my eyes were on her boobs!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That was a very excellent episode of Voyager, and I agree about TNG's best episodes.

Thanks for hosting such a fun blogfest, Ellie.

  41. It just occurred to me how ridiculously easy it would be to make a Tribble. I might have to try it...

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think it's funny how the Tribbles react to Klingons! LOL!

    Love First Contact, too! :)

Thank you for hosting such a reminiscing blogfest, I'm having fun! :)

  47. Great job with the blogfest and great choices!

  48. Interesting that you chose "Year of Hell" for Voyager. That series had its ups and downs, but that episode showed realistically what even such an advanced spaceship would go through, in terms of extended battles: A lot of people die. Some characters we like get scarred up. And the dad from "That 70s Show" is a serious villain. Hmm. Maybe one of those wasn't real.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Awesome blogfest, Ellie!! So many good trekkie memories. Year of Hell was a great episode for Voyager. And I'd totally have a Tribble!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. The Trouble With Tribbles was a shining moment for TOS.

A step-niece gave me a Tribble for Christmas last year. Everyone thought she was crazy - cheap. I love the darling little furball.

A couple nights ago one of my adult sons came across the Tribble lying in the dark. He poked at it with his bare toe, causing it to vibrate and squeel. Then he kicked it across the room (it nearly made him p-- himself with the unexpected noise) and when it landed in the nightlight he woke everyone up with his laughter.

And you're so right about only Ricardo for Kahn!

Thanks for this awesome blogfest. It was a lot of fun :)

And thanks so much for taking us all on this blogfest journey.

Since I'm telling everybody else who picked it - the original title for "Amok Time" was "Spock blows top"
