A Writer's Thanksgiving & Get Your Beacon On

A shorter post than usual post this week, because I'm over at Untethered Realms sharing all the things I'm thankful for as a writer. Drop by and share what makes you thankful during this American holiday or any other time of the year.

The insanely talented and always cool, Angela Brown has launched another book baby into the world - YA dystopian, Beacon, published by Evernight Teen. Congratulations, Angela! As she so aptly put it in her recent blog post, get your Beacon on.

Blurb
Ripped Ties, 1
Tsunamis reduced the USA into a shell of itself, called The Fold. Surviving humans and vampires joined forces to form The Colony, where registered citizens do as they're told.
They donate blood quarterly and dream of being chosen as Attendees for the Jubilee celebrations, that is, everyone except Macie Breen. With high school graduation near, she’s anxious to ditch the rules in hopes of starting a new life with Thane, an unregistered and also her best friend.
Her hopes fizzle when Macie is selected as an Attendee, forever registered. Any future with Thane…impossible. Being chosen comes with another unexpected price.
Truths about The Colony blaze into ashes and lies when she discovers the vampires haven't kept their part of the bargain. Worst still, Macie’s life unravels as her stint in the city of Bliss forces her to face daunting truths about who, and what, she really is.

News, News, News & A Nano-fantastic Offer

Another post jammed-packed with exciting news from the blogging and writing worlds. Plus, a Nano-fantastic offer from my cover designer.

Where to begin?

Alex J. Cavanaugh revealed the cover for his eagerly-awaited Dragon of the Stars earlier this month. Isn't it stunning? I can't wait to add this alongside his CassaStar Trilogy on my bookshelf.

The ship of legends…

The future is set for Lt. Commander Aden Pendar, son of a Hyrathian Duke. He’s poised to secure his own command and marriage to the queen’s daughter. He’ll stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

But when the Alliance denies Hyrath’s claim on the planet of Kavil and declares war on their world, Aden finds his plans in disarray. Entrenched in battle and told he won’t make captain, Aden’s world begins to collapse. How will he salvage his career and future during Hyrath’s darkest hour?

One chance remains–the Dragon. Lost many years prior, the legendary ship’s unique weapon is Hyrath’s only hope. Can Aden find the Dragon, save his people, and prove he’s capable of commanding his own ship?

Dragon of the Stars releases April 7th. It's also made it on to Goodread's Most Anticipated Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror of 2015 list. If it's on your TBR list, drop by and vote for it. There's also a Goodread's giveaway for those in the US and Canada.

Angela Brown has an upcoming YA urban fantasy/dystopian being published by Evernight Teen. Last week she shared the gorgeous cover for Beacon.

I'm sure Angela will sharing more news about this exciting release soon.

Charity Bradford has decided to self-publish her latest novel, urban fantasy Fade Into Me. To make sure it's the very best it can be, she launched a Kickstarter campaign to help 'Fund the cost of an editor, cover artist and formatting for print and e-publishing of a new romance novel with a magical twist to it'.

As with all Kickstarter campaigns, it needs to be 100% funded to receive any funding. Even if you can't help financially, please help to spread the word. Here's Charity to tell you more.

Welcome to the steampunk realm, with eleven authors guiding your path.

Gears of Brass is a steampunk anthology published through Curiosity Quills. Within the pages, you’ll come across clockwork inventions and steampunk-ified fairy tale retellings.  Eleven authors will guide you through worlds filled with airships, top hats, and corsets.

TEASER:

“Stealing a few steps backward, I reached for him and brushed my fingertips along his cheek. Static energy crept across my palm. It glowed blue and pulled like taffy, sticking to my fingertips, then snapping back to his skin. My hand jerked back so hard I hit myself in the chest. My eyes traipsed down his neck, his shoulders, finally stopping at his midsection. It was almost as though I could see inside him. ”

“The guards struggled forward, but failed to move even an inch. Everyone was frozen in place, except the uninvited guest. The man floated toward Lord and Lady Miller. “You see, my lord, your wife made a deal with me that cannot be broken. Your daughter is mine.”

“I swiped my hand across my nose, wishing I could smell the green of the trees. Eyes burning, I swallowed hard, feeling the incision in my throat where they’d cut out my sinus enhancer. I would never be able to smell my exotic perfumes again.”

“Anthie watched the lissom liquid slip inside the carrying tube. I could see her inhaling the smell of the lubricating oil. So could Dr. Holmgren. From time to time he looked across at us through his reinforced goggles. They gave him the appearance of a baby owl, which was at odds with his general nastiness. I knew he was taking everything in. And I knew he had a special eye on Anthie.”

“In a hidden room deep inside the base of the great clock there was a click, a whir of gears, a valve opened, and the key chamber was flooded with air. Several minutes later, Bella awoke. The girl coughed, choked then screamed as blood began to once again flow through her veins: the first time in a millennium.”

“Something growled near to her right. The hairs along Redyn’s arms stood up and she held her breath. The sound came again, deep, guttural. Redyn turned her head, her lips parted, her gaze scanning the forest. They’d told her not to wander far from the cottage, but they couldn’t have expected her to play with that hideous excuse for a doll near everyone else.
A wolf crept out of the shadows, his gray fur standing on end like hers.”

“Three years ago, your father ruined my life. He terminated my family’s reputation.”

“Um…” Amethyst wished she could back up further. Wind pushed at her top hat, so she shoved it up higher to straighten it. “I don’t understand.”

“Now, I’ll ruin his life.”

Induction Day
Induction Day (Butterman {Time} Travel, Inc #2)
Ages: 16+
Pages: 247

The year 2069 is coming to a close, and eighteen-year-old Bianca Butterman's time-craft license is finally official. She's ready for the Induction Day she’s waited for since she was a kid—the one that will secure her name on the Butterman family tree of time travelers. But ever since the media discovered Bianca is pop superstar Tristan Helms’ latest new honey, everything Bianca does or says becomes a target of criticism. Having her professional credibility topping the gossip sites across social media is an open invitation for the government to step in and regulate Bianca’s Induction. Now she will have to ask herself if saving 1500 people from drowning is worth losing everything she’s ever worked for, including the Butterman family biz.

Excerpt:

Okay, this is weird. Why do I feel like a total prude around this chick who’s old enough to be my great, great, great grandma? And who’s got her collar buttoned up to her neck and the hem of her dress grazing her ankles in crew-enforced modesty.

But that thought is interrupted with something far less trivial—a fact that’s so morbid my mouth goes dry. I remember Adelaide’s fate aboard Titanic. She doesn’t survive.

Dread wells up inside me now, and even though this person has been long dead in my own timeline, she’s alive and energetic in hers. And perfectly clueless of what’s about to happen.

The Soulless Are Coming: Casting A Trilogy

Today I'm thrilled to have friend and YA author, Crystal Collier stopping by to tell us about casting her Maiden of Time trilogy. How cool is that? Over to you, Crystal.

Casting is especially difficult for me because I'm a SUPER visual person, so when I create characters, I have a VERY specific image in mind. It's almost impossible to find a match. Because of that, there are no easy-fit actors or actresses for my characters. (Contains spoilers for those who haven't read MOONLESS. Get your copy October 13, 20, 27, 31 or November 7 for FREE.)

Villains first (because they're so stinkin' interesting):

Bellezza

(Olivia Little...but a unique angle on her.)

Bellezza is driven by only one motive: revenge. She has no qualms with killing or initiating a war to get what she wants, and she especially enjoys head games. With unique abilities to travel by mist or kill with a scream, she's a formidable foe.

Amos

(Amos Oz and Skull Face)
(Before and After)

Amos has been one of the Soulless for centuries, slowly decaying but unable to die. Since the battle between the Soulless and Passionate began, he's been leading a faction of the Soulless to undermine the Passionate and take absolute control of his kind.

Now to the Outcasts (who are equally as awesome):

Sarah

(Katie McGrath)

Sarah is a total flirt and Alexia's (the lead's) best friend/aunt. She's also recently become one of the Soulless, and went into hiding. Lighthearted, vivacious and occasionally unladylike (despite her noble upbringing), she is always the heart of the party.

Miles

(Jamie Bell)

Miles is a friend, protege and sidekick to the leader of the Passionate. He has a gift to "see through other's eyes." Because of that, he's been feared and avoided by most the Passionate. His parents became Soulless when he was 4 (enemies to the Passionate who hunt them on moonless nights) and he hears them calling for him every new moon. Loyal to the death, he's a timid soul who truly and deeply desires to do what's right, willing to sacrifice everything for the greater good. A recent turn of events made him too dangerous to remain among the Passionate.

About SOULLESS:

The Soulless are coming.

Alexia manipulated time to save the man of her dreams, and lost her best friend to red-eyed wraiths. Still grieving, she struggles to reconcile her loss with what was gained: her impending marriage. But when her wedding is destroyed by the Soulless—who then steal the only protection her people have—she’s forced to unleash her true power.

And risk losing everything.

Book 2 in the Maiden of Time trilogy.

Meet the characters for yourselves by getting the books HERE,
or enter to win some AWESOME prizes.

Thank you, Crystal. I loved seeing something of the world you've created. Like you, I'm a visual person. I like to create picture boards for my books, either on hard copy or on Pinterest. It's a great way to both inspire and brainstorm.
